"At a lot of the big ranches, to save time at roundup, the best catch-hand has the job of catching the horses for the crew to ride. The cowboy will say, 'Gimmy ol' Odd Sox', or 'How about the one with the blaze', or 'I'll take the gray.' The catch-hand 'throws the hoolihan' (a way of tossing the rope without swinging it round and round like a roper on horseback does, because that would warn the horse the rope is coming and he might dodge it) snags the chosen pony and hands him over to the cowboy to saddle and ride.
