"Moving cattle across the West Texas Pecos River was not always easy. There were many sections of the river dotted with treacherous quicksand. One of the few safe places was Horsehead Crossing. I painted it late in the day because most ranchers would try to get their cattle to the crossing in the evening, bed them down and cross next morning while the horses, men and cattle were fresh.
