"Some of the Plains tribes leaders would ride forward from the camp or from their band of followers, thrust a coup stick, lance or talking stick into the ground and slowly ride their pony around it. A visitor, the law (in this case soldiers) or even an enemy, upon seeing this, knew it was time to have a talk and could, with great assurance, ride forward in safety to have that meeting.
